Yiling Zhao is a Beijing-born, London-based image artist, combining performance art, photography, character design, and filmmaking. She transforms sinofuturist sensibility emerging from netizen culture, into cinematic tableaux, reworking underground and internet-driven aesthetics into a sensibility that responds directly to pop culture and fashion. Yiling presents a unique combination of movement sensibility from her self-study in interdisciplinary theatre, into her experience in fashion and commercial photography. Each informing the other.

Photography & Moving Image
Yiling’s works are character driven tableau-vivants: Vivid still-lives where story, fashion style, character design, and scenography merge into an interdisciplinary language.
Yiling's photographic practice began ten years ago, strictly shooting, developing and printing black-and-white film by hand in the darkroom. As her technical confidence matured into experimenting freely with darkroom chemistry and with the medium of image-making itself, she expanded into digital and moving image, going on to make three short films and an extensive body of photographic work.
Movement Director
As a movement director, Yiling has collaborated with world class athletes, actors, dancers and models, choreographed fashion shows, and blocked scenes for film and music video, often orchestrating multiple bodies across professional sets. She brings a personalised, confident coaching style enabling actors, models, performers and non-performers alike to connect to the stage or screen in organic, though-provoking ways
Yiling grounds her every approach in extensive research, constantly in development and study of world building through bodies and surroundings.

Trompe L'Oeil Is Underrated - with Yiling Zhao
The divide between “reality” and “simulation” has been litigated to death, to the point that it feels hack to indulge the conversation much more—what does something as unrelated to our everyday gripes and celebrations as abstract ontology have to provide us at this point? Beijing-born artist Chen Tianzhuo has dabbled in so many fields over such a short sprint of time, it’s hard to define his work today.
